So, you’ve got your gear. Maybe you picked up the Creative Pebbles or those SoundMAGIC IEMs we talked about in our article spending less than £100 to boost your audio. They sound good, right? But what if I told you they could sound great for £0?
Most entry-level audio gear has “factory quirks”—maybe the bass is a bit muddy or the vocals feel like they’re hiding behind a curtain. We’re going to fix that using Software EQ.
The Toolkit
To do this on Windows, you need two free pieces of software:
- Equalizer APO: The “engine” that changes the sound.
- Peace GUI: The “dashboard” that makes it easy (and pretty) to use.
Step 1: The Installation
Download and install Equalizer APO first. During setup, it will ask which device you want to “install” it to—make sure you select your DAC or your Speakers. Restart your PC (yes, actually do it!). Then, install the Peace GUI.
Step 2: The “Groover” Baseline
Open Peace. You’ll see a bunch of sliders. Don’t be intimidated! We are going to focus on three key areas to “clean up” budget audio:
- The “Mud” Cut (150Hz – 250Hz): Budget speakers often over-emphasize this area to sound “bigger,” but it just makes things blurry. Drop the slider at 200Hz by about -3dB. Suddenly, the bass feels tighter.
- The Vocal Lift (3kHz): This is where the human voice lives. Give this a tiny nudge up (+2dB). It’s like the singer just stepped closer to the microphone.
- The “Air” Sparkle (10kHz+): If your music feels “dark,” raise the high-end sliders slightly. It adds that crisp detail to cymbals and acoustic guitar strings.
Step 3: Use Your Ears
The best part of the Audio Groover philosophy? There is no “wrong” setting. * Play your favourite “reference” track (the one you know every note of).
- Toggle the “Effect” button in Peace on and off.
- If it sounds clearer and more exciting, you’ve won.
